Novel series; Becoming Her - The Story 1

Volume 1 - Part 1

Michelle's Corner: My first novel series ✌. Thanks to everyone who read the previous posts. I hope you liked it? although I have received some supportive emails🙋, I will also appreciate if readers can also add to the comment section. This is a story partially based on a true life story but with some twists (fiction). I hope that you follow the series and you enjoy it. Now let’s get today’s write-up started😌.

The Hook -The day it all changed

In the early hours of the morning, she opened her eyes, turned and stretched her hands to the other side of the bed, she realized he was not there. She rose gradually, clutched the pillow beside her and placed it beneath her head - on top of the flat one she had slept on. With her hands placed on her belly, she looked a bit sad or maybe worried – It wasn’t a mistake, He is my friend; she thought.

*********************************************************************************

The Genesis - Tolu

Toluwanimi is a third-year medical student. She had recently passed the basic science exam and qualified for a 75% tuition waiver for her remaining years in medical school. She met Tobi few weeks into her first year as a medic in embryo – he was in his third year in the same department. She had dismissed him when he approached her in the midst of her friends - Bamike, Uloma, and Seyitan. They recognized Tobi; he was previously discussed in the female dormitory as the medic with the “fine face”. He was very prominent as the medical student “with the sauce”, people assumed he was proud; no one really knew his academic standing, but they felt he wasn’t very intelligent, although they found his fashion sense commendable. I guess this prompted Tolu’s attitude.

Days later, the old students decided to organize a late welcome party for the newbies. Tolu and her friends were excited to get a break from their new boring and hectic lives, their first few classes had definitely taken all the time. On the D-day, all the newbies were dressed up and ready to have fun. The guys (both old and new) were eager to officially meet the girls, while the females in their second year and over, were not so happy about the new girls; they were probably thinking that the newbies will cause commotions, and this would work against them. The girls left their hostels one after the other and made their way to the hall, where the party was being held. On getting to the entrance, Tolu couldn’t find her student card, she had to walk back to the hostel to get it. On her way back to the hall, she saw a tall guy with his head down and earphones on, walking in the opposite direction on the other side of the road. She wanted to get a proper look at the face, so she kept on staring whilst walking across the road. He looked up and their eyes met – It was Tobi.

This time she got a good look at him and he looked so good in his short and armless shirt. His biceps were huge, this made her swallow her saliva more than once as she walked towards him. As they approached each other, Tobi removed his earphones and smiled at Tolu. He managed to murmur “Hey…you”, Tolu tried to dismiss her excited face but she failed to. She ended up responding with a little side smile. Tobi commented on her short but nice smile and acknowledged that she looked beautiful. With the unfazed smile, she walked slowing away from him. He held her by her wrist to stop her from walking away, this shocked Tolu but she didn’t feel the need to act otherwise – yeah I know she indulged him. She stopped to have a little chat about his absence at the party, he explained that he wasn’t enthused. She smiled again and asked if she could leave, as her friends were waiting for her at the entrance. He slowly released his hands; he noticed that she was uncomfortable on her heels. He smiled while turning in the direction of the party and asked “can I walk with you then?” she nodded in agreement as she held on to his wrist.

On getting to a close proximity to the hall, Tobi noticed that Bamike signaled to two other girls (Seyitan and Uloma) – who were busy taking pictures and checking out cute boys. They all maintained a position while smiling at Tobi and Tolu from their spot. Tolu introduced them to Tobi, he recognized Bamike – she was earlier with one of his classmates. He smiled at the other girls and murmured “I know her” – pointing to Bamike. The others looked shocked, she not once mentioned meeting him – an untold story. Fast forward to the party, Tobi left Tolu smitten but at the entrance - yes he went about his loner life, although she had tried to conceal it all. They all had fun irrespective.

Enjoyed this? STAY TUNED for the post.

OH WOW! moments last week: #BBNAIJA #AVICII #LAZYNIGERIANYOUTHS + VIDEOS

Hi guys,

Michelle's Corner: My second Oh Wow! post ✌. Thanks to everyone who read the previous one. I hope you liked it? although I have received some supportive emails🙋, I will also appreciate if readers can also add their opinions and views in the comment section. Now let’s get today’s write-up started😌.

….So last week, we had lots of OH WOW! Moments. Big brother Naija’s Cee-c trended worldwide on twitter, as a result of her verbal abuse towards Tobi😦.

Watch Cee-C insult Tobi below:

Miracle Igbokwe emerged the winner of the 2018 #BBNaija – Although this didn'tt come as a surprise to many 😅. Towards the end of their last week in the house, Tobi’s manhood was a major social media discussion😶. The news that remained the saddest of the week, was the death of one of the most recognized Dj in the world – Avicii 😭(...so wake me up when is all over, when my…..). He was very talented and young. However, our president (Nigeria – Muhammadu Buhari) managed to create a currently trending hash-tag “LazyNigerianYouths.”

#LazyNigerianYouths

Below are some of the reactions from youths, public figures: celebrities, notable politicians, and other government officials.

We all know that majority of Nigerian youths are not even close to being lazy – it’s a general knowledge. What I can't comprehend is our president’s rationale behind the statement. He was at a commonwealth business conference for Christ's sake.

Were his comments based on the youths around him?

Is he more clueless about what is going on in Nigeria than we thought?

Did he really mean what he communicated?

These are questions that I wish his media aid can help us clarify. The number one citizen/father figure in Nigeria thinks Nigerian youths are lazy and uneducated. This is highly preposterous.

Let us remind ourselves that we are not LAZY and nothing anyone assumes will deter us from being HARDWORKING and true to ourselves. #HardworkingNigerianYouths

Watch our president disregard us below:

Oh Wow! Khloe Kardashian's Boyfriend cheating scandal - My View

Hello guys,

Michelle's Corner: To make my weekly post a lot more diverse, I have decided to create an additional segment - “Oh Wow!”. I will be weighing in on different occurrence in the world today, which I think we need to discuss more. I am hoping that this will be more of pop-culture. THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT A GOSSIP BLOG. IT IS JUST CREATIVE WRITING.

This week has been filled with some heartbreaking news, but I will like to weigh in on Khloe Kardashian’s boyfriend/baby daddy (Tristan Thompson). Tristan’s cheating scandal has been in the news since late last year (2017), when a video of him kissing and fondling with two women came out - you can watch here. I think the story is definitely out of control now and I feel so bad for Khloe. I know we all want to get married and find ‘the one’ but all these scary news, we will still get married *sarsasm*. Some people say Khloe’s issue is Karma - this is because she started dating Tristan while his first baby mama was about seven months pregnant with his first child. Maybe it is, but remember that Khloe was once married to Lamar Odom, who was also a serial cheater while they were married. Yes, Lamar had other children with his first woman, but they were reportedly not together when he met Khloe. She (Khloe) has consistently had to deal with unfaithful men and I think this is sad. Oh wow!

This issue is globally generalizable. In Nigeria, celebrities and Public figures have constantly battled infidelity with their spouses. In 2016, Toke Makinwa - media personality, realized that her husband had impregnated his ‘side chick’ shortly after their wedding. Earlier that year, Tiwa savage – A musician, recounted how her husband had been cheating on her with “edible catering”, even while she was having a miscarriage outside the country. Maybe it was just compatibility issues, Damilola Adegbite and Chris Attoh – both actors, quietly dissolved their marriage. While Mercy Aigbe’s husband claimed that she had been unfaithful in their marriage, after Mercy outed him as a wife beater.

Brad Pit and Angelina Jolie; and Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan decided to end their marriage amicalbly (we don’t know the story around that).

The most confusing thing is, as marriages are being dissolved, other’s are thriving and growing stronger. To mention a few, Bankole Wellington and Adesua Etomi; Amarachi and Kanu Nwankwo; Kim Kardashian and Kanye West; Omoni and Nnamdi Oboli; Omotola Jalade and Captain Mathew Ekeinde; Psquare and their wives and so on. Is it that these couples have an ideal system that is working for them? Do they experience these issues but handle it differently? Did they get married for the right reasons? What are the right reason? So many unanswered questions.

As much we need to respect the institution of marriage, I think these issues should be addressed, to help newly weds and singles.

I know HEART ACHE isn’t easy.

Vol 2 “Whatever path we chose to take, there will be highs and lows” - Jessie J

Michelle's corner: Yes yes yes!!! I promised to post volume 2 last week (Monday)👧. Apologies guys, I was enjoying the long weekend to the detriment of my school work and blog😀. Therefore, I had to sort out school throughout the week, to a reasonable extent. Thanks to everyone who read my previous post. I hope you liked it? And it was educational ✌. Now let’s get today’s write-up started.

Hello guys,

I will be discussing one of the messages in the “Whatever path we choose to take, there will be highs and lows” series; please read volume 1 here. For this write-up I will be discussing the second point - JUST TRY AGAIN.

“The harder you fall the harder you try”

I would like to play a game of “what if” today. I will be taking different realistic and fictional scenarios and highlight certain decisions that might change the result of each presumed “fall.”

LET’S GO

A family friend who didn’t have a child five years into her marriage opted for In-vitro fertilization (IVF). She was consistently told nothing was medically wrong with both her and the husband, but nothing happened still. Her first five IVF procedures were not successful, on the 6th try she got pregnant and had an healthy baby girl (who is her only child till date). You should also bear in mind that this procedure is very expensive and she spent millions of Naira. My question is: what if she had stopped the procedure? Would she have been gotten pregnant regardless? 😕

I remember watching Laurie and F.E.B Idahosa’s interview on Linda Ikeji TV. Laurie gave details about her fertility struggles and this was really touching😟. The couple have three children now, but they had their share of fertility issues. They were told by doctors that there was a 99.99 per cent chance that they would not have a child. They however, decided on IVF. Laurie’s 5th time on the procedure was successful, but the baby boy died hours after birth😞. Months after the loss of their baby, she got pregnant naturally (without IVF) and gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Obviously, she was healing after the sad event of her first baby, but she only got pregnant when she stopped.

Similarly, after a successful first IVF procedure, Celine Dion delivered her first child (Rene-Charles). She later had her twin boys after many failed IVFs, specifically five. Celine insisted that she was pretty determined to have another child(ren). In her words; “I was going to try until the doctor would say to me, ‘You cannot try anymore'”. What if she didn’t persist? Would she have had more children or not? These are questions we all can’t answer😔.

Another scenario

A young lady at my auntie’s work place was often shamed for dating her bosses (even when it was not true.) and not being married😒. She never argued or tried to fight anyone about her personal issues. She consistently dated her ideal men and never lowered her standards (Which were quite reasonable: kind, employed or with prospect, etc.) for any reason. After several failed relationships, she is now happily married, 8 years and counting, with two kids. Her marriage is what I consider #relationshipgoals. What if she had lowered her standards? Being consistent at what she wanted gave her a happy ending, in my opinion😛.

Scenario 3

A friend of mine once had the opportunity to go for medicine after her undergraduate degree, but declined. She thought she couldn't endure 4 more years of an undergraduate degree. She opted for a masters degree but now feels bad about her decision. I think she thought MSc was an easier choice. However, after enduring the grueling postgraduate degree, she realized that that the mental strength could have been better spent earning a medical degree. My question is: would it have been better if she had gone to medical school? (we don’t know that.) Or was she right to think medicine is harder and she couldn't have survived the process?

Finally

Recently, I was watching the latest episode of grey’s anatomy (you can read my previous post on the series here). Meredith Grey was going to give up her medical trial on producing mini livers in humans. The mini livers are meant to provide the functions of the main liver, if damaged. The trial was almost hampered when a blast from the past stole her methods. The woman also refused to give Meredith the polymer she requested for the trial procedure. As fate would have it, her resident (Dr Joe Wilson) convinced her to continue the trial and look for other polymers that will work in place of the lost one. During the animal trials, Meredith and Joe realized that the rat that developed the mini livers did not require a polymer to work. As you can tell, If Meredith had insisted on ending the trial because she felt defeated, this wouldn't have been known.

What I think

Contrary to what people think, I consider trying again as subjective. Sometimes people try again because they are hopeful that they can take what comes from whatever they are doing. Some people believe that the second step to moving on or healing (I think the first step is denial.) is acceptance. You should understand that at some point, certain things are out of your capabilities. THIS IS NOT A WEAKNESS.

Personally, I think we all should try to know our limits (although it's not easy). However, often times we are stronger than we think, we just need someone to help us understand that.

Are you persistent? Has it always worked for you? PLEASE share your views in the comment section. #JustTryAgain

#LiveYourLife - Jessie J

Vol 1 “Whatever path we choose to take, there will be highs and lows” - Jessie J

Michelle's corner: Sorry for the delay 😊. Thanks to everyone that read my previous post👋, I hope it was fun to read and educational✌.

Hi guys,

Jessica Ellen Cornish (Jessie J) is one of my favorite English singer and songwriter. Her songs are not only full of life; they are rich in amazing lyrics. I remember feeling all hyped the first time I heard “price tag” - one of her earliest songs (I know most people did too😉). Remember “Pitch Perfect 2 - Flashlight”, she wrote and recorded that too. Angie Miller – an American Idol alum, helped heighten my love for Jessie’s music through her rendition of “mamma knows best” “who you are” and “nobody’s perfect” (you should watch these performances on Youtube😄).

http://www.fanpop.com/clubs/jessie-j/images/35489374/title/jessie-j-alive-fanart
I was recently listening to Jessie’s “Alive” Album, and “Harder we fall” came on. Just like every topic I have chosen to write about, the messages of the song just imprinted in my brain and I decided to make these our discussion today. I was able to deduce the under-listed (maybe not limited to these, you could find more when you listen to the song itself✌):
  1. Enjoy the present while preparing for tomorrow. LIVE YOUR LIFE
  2. The harder you fall the harder you try. JUST TRY AGAIN
  3. Don’t cut corners because you want the easy way, the reality no one tells us is - nothing is easy in life. WHATEVER PATH WE CHOOSE THE HUSTLE IS THE SAME
I will be discussing these IMPORTANT messages in series; for this write-up we will discuss the first point - LIVE YOUR LIFE

I once had a friend who liked to dwell on the present without thinking about tomorrow. She later realized that, in most case, its what you sow that you’ll reap. Personally, I think the present shapes how tomorrow will look like. You can’t be nonchalant about your present life and expect tomorrow to be any different. People say “today is pregnant and you deliver tomorrow” (not sure how the proverb goes, but you get what I am trying to say 😝). The truth is, I am guilty of living in the moment, but early adulthood has shown me “pepper”; from making rash decisions TO not practically analyzing my thoughts, most of which led to regrettable decisions.

Nonetheless, one of my friends who would normally plan for the future even before settling in the present, has also regretted her actions😑. She wished that she had settled in the moment for a bit, before looking into the future. For example, she got a job after undergraduate with great prospect and pay (in Nigeria, this is rare 😟), but didn’t work a month at the job before she insisted on a masters degree overseas (which was funded by her parents). This was because most of us were going for our postgraduate degrees outside the country. Unknowing to her, people were leaving for these degrees because they couldn’t find a job with their Bachelors (myself included). Fast forward to now, she is back in the country, her masters degree didn’t go as expected and she presently has no job. The most frustrating thing, for her, are the sponsored overseas postgraduate degrees and short courses organized by her old work place, for our mates who secured the job when she did back then.

I can only advice that we should take each day as it comes and try to understand today before pursuing tomorrow. I am of the opinion that if today is dealt with, tomorrow is sorted (hopefully).

Have you been living in the moment or planning for the future or both at every stage of your life? PLEASE share in the comment section or send me an email to post anonymously on whether any of those have been helpful or not. #LiveYourLIfe

#LearningToEvolve - Big Brother Naija

“Sometimes you learn but you don’t recognize the lesson as it comes: K-Brule Big Brother Naija, 16 February 2018"

Michelle's corner: Thanks to everyone that read my previous post👋, I hope you liked it✌.

Image from: https://goo.gl/CHufrT
Just like many Nigerians right now, I watch Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) 😄 and I try to follow the show. The frenzy around BBNaija is so intense, and the fan-base has increased since the 2017 - see gobbe season. Just like most people, I have gotten used to the housemates (HMs), and at this point do not wish anyone leaves (Though not possible!!). The HMs have individually contributed to the show's popularity with their distinct characters👍.

Bambam’s subtle but calculative features show her commendable tolerance and cohabiting ability. Her relationship with Teddy😉has also created fan wars #BamTeddy; Teddy’s ability to remain friends with everyone, whilst still competing in the game, is just pure focus. This is commendable as he's aware of the HMs' (Tobi in particular😸) “beef” for his relationship with Bam. Tobi’s body is unquestionable #ManGoals (That boy is FINE!!!💪😜), his roller-coaster relationship with Cee-c has definitely caused a lot of social media "wahala"; Cee-c’s Saturday "bumbum" dance is definitely a trademark, however, her previous friction with Lolu was the real "double wahala👊.

Image from:http://www.ghafla.com/ng/bbndouble-wahala-housemates-possible-fake-eviction/
Lolu’s spoken English is always a delight to the ear, his romance with the beautiful naturalista – Anto is cute; Anto’s fire spirit with her very blunt “no time to waste time” attitude is super cool, her cornrows by Nina makes me wonder what I did wrong with my hair. Nina’s character “screams” young but she is undeniably a breath of fresh air, Her romance with Miracle makes relationships look less complicated; Miracle’s gentle but playful and manly behavior sure gets to the ladies😉. Rico’s funny gestures are widely appreciated, as well as Alex’s dance skills💃. Without totally diverting from the primary reason for this write-up, I should “jejely” go to K-Brule😀.

Image from:http://kitodiaries.com/but-how-gay-is-bbnaija-double-wahala/
K-Brule is my lightweight "broda" that does not handle alcohol very well. I thought he was a cool dude in the house, sadly he was disqualified at the first eviction show😑. On the 16th of February 2018, as I was working on some documents from school, I turned on the TV to watch BBNaija. K-Brule was seated with Lolu and maybe Angel (can't remember the third person) in the garden, they were having a very serious and deep conversation about the moment they had to grow up. Lolu sadly stated that his mum's death made him realize he needed to grow up👨. During their interactive conversation on growth and self-betterness, K-Brule contributed to Lolu’s discussion by suggesting that “sometimes you learn but you don’t recognize the lesson as it comes”. He added that “somethings happen later and you react differently, then you realize you reacted that way because of the lessons you previously learned (unknowingly)”. I stopped what I was doing for a minute to properly digest what I just heard him say. I think this is very TRUE!!!

I thought about this quote for a while and I found numerous scenarios. However, I decided to share the most recent of all:

A friend of mine whom I would normally help when she needed my assistance, neglected to help me with something of great importance. This was someone that I would assist, even when it was not convenient or when I was in a very bad mood. By the way, I am someone who loves to help people as much as I can and in a weird way, I expect everyone to be like that. This is why I was really hurt by this. However, unlike my previous self, I handled things differently. Previously, I would have cut ties with the person and just see such people as evil and self-centered, thereby losing friends. The thing is, maybe this particular friend was/is self-centered or needs an attitude change, however, I decided to lower my expectation and wait till my anger settled. I later contacted her to express my disappointment, to which she gave excuses and apologized. I accepted the apology and we are still friends, but now I understand the level of friendship that exists between us.

I would have never tried to settle the issue and might have held a grudge, but I chose not to. This is because I realized that leaving people because they do not give you as much as you give them, doesn’t ensure that you will find better people. You can choose to understand the level of friendship and hope to find others with similar spirit as yours. This doesn't suggest that my approach to this situation was right, but I decided to break the cycle of leaving people because of my expectations from them; often times old friends will claim that I drifted away and they never understood why😞.

I have recently started evaluating how much I have grown and I think I am doing well. Kindly do the same, as lessons learned are measures of how much you had to deal with to GROW.

Love,

Michelle

#MessedupToStepup - Grey's Anatomy

“Maybe we have to get a little messed up before we can step up: Alex Karev, Grey's Anatomy Season 5 Episode 19”

Hello Guys!!!

To kick start my weekly write-ups, I decided to start with one of my favorite series – Grey's Anatomy (GA; a fictional US medical series on the lives of surgeons). After completing my chores on Saturday, I considered watching a movie (as NEPA no gree bring light😊), however, Scrolling through my collection of movies got tiring, so I decided to watch old seasons of GA. This is an old habit 😑 but this time I chose the fifth season and the nineteenth episode. I was thereafter influenced to write about a particular phrase that got to me. The quote “Maybe we have to get a little messed up before we can step up” is one of those that I don’t think I have personally verified if true. I am only sharing my opinion based on this episode of GA, to which the phrase was coined. I will also advise on whether I think people can step up after they have hit rock bottom – lowest place👌.

This episode of Grey's Anatomy began with Alex Karev (surgical resident) narrating and suggesting that surgeons are “messed up knife happy butchers.” Owen Hunt (trauma surgeon - retired army) was seen strangling his girlfriend (Kristina Yang – surgical resident), as a result of the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) he suffers from being in the army. Derek Shepherd (neurosurgeon) was seen coming out of his “dark hole” by showing the engagement ring he once threw in the bush, to his girlfriend (Meredith Grey – surgical resident) and later practicing his technique to surgically remove the tumors in Izzy Steven’s (Cancer patient/surgical resident) brain. Finally, an elderly woman who was given three months to live was being revived after her heart stopped the 100th time, years later. Her family members present were furious; claiming to be ready for her death.

Towards the end of the episode, Alex realized that he had to be more responsible than he had been for Izzy, after distancing himself from her all day and not treating her right for the most part of their relationship – He stepped up👌. Kristina confessed to Owen that she was scared of him and couldn't handle being with his PTSD self. She earlier dismissed the incident in the morning telling him “I told you I know my limits, let me decide what I can handle” - She stepped up😥. Derek’s surgery on Izzy went has planned, he soon proposed to Meredith afterwards – He stepped up 😉. The old woman later died soon after she told Alex that “people are better than no people”, as her family members are all she had left and they inevitably came when she required them. Note that: her family members were in tears when she finally died – They stepped up. Alex concluded that the end of the episode that “maybe we have to get a little messed up before we can step up” and “trauma always leaves a scar, it changes our lives.” 😟

When I think about being messed up I ruminate over my entire existence. Notwithstanding, we all have different degrees to which we have been messed up (Yours might be deeper than mine – most definitely.). The major question is “Have I stepped up from the “presumed” issues that messed me up? If no, do I think I will step up?”

I remember failing a course in my second year undergraduate, because I had thought I didn't need to read as hard as I did for o’ level and first year (yes, I was over confident: I did well the 1st year and 2nd year - 1st semester). I ended up learning the hard way that hard work never stops. Yes, I passed after rewriting the exam a year later, but I never forgot the disappointment on everyone’s (parents and siblings) face – I stepped up. Also, for everything that I have failed at or never tried, one thing I always held on to was my education. Nevertheless, 2016-2017 threw me of my balance, and I was close to hitting rock bottom. It required something that I “perceived” as failure at the end of 2017, to reset my head (you know when your face becomes very clear after being cloudy for a while). I now understand that no one is responsible for your life, it’s JUST YOU. Not sure if I have stepped up from this, but I learnt some harsh lessons.

When it comes to stepping up after you have been messed up, be it in your academics, relationships, work or anything that puts you down. You need to UNDERSTAND the lessons you have learnt from the process. These should reflect in your decisions thereafter. Stepping up doesn't mean totally absolving ones self from the bleakest days, but moving forward with understanding of the past to change the present. Subjectively, I think YES you can STEP UP after being MESSED UP. Nonetheless, it can’t be the only way you STEP UP!!!

Love,

M.George
